CS Mvurya Names 38-Member Team to Drive Kenya’s AFCON 2027 Preparations

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has officially appointed a 38-member Local Organising Committee (LOC) that will spearhead preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a historic tournament that Kenya will co-host alongside Tanzania and Uganda.

The appointment marks a major step in the region’s journey toward delivering one of Africa’s biggest football events.

In the appointments announced through a special gazette notice dated Monday, March 30, veteran sports administrator Nicholas Musonye was named the chairperson of the committee.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed will serve as the vice-chairperson, bringing in leadership from the country’s football governing body.

The committee brings together a mix of experienced sports administrators, government officials, and football personalities.

Among those appointed are Evans Achoki, former Inter Milan midfielder McDonald Mariga, Brigadier Titus Sokobe, Osman Abdi, June Chepkemei, Mary Mwiti, Nuh Ibrahim, Agnes Kalekye, and Peninah Wahome.

Their inclusion reflects the government’s intention to bring together diverse expertise to ensure successful planning and execution.

Other members named to the powerful team include Douglas Ratemo, Timothy Kilimo, Dr Doreen Odhiambo, Lilian Nyawada, respected football administrator and former FKF CEO Lordvick Aduda, K. K. Mutai, Juma Maulidi Wahoga, Rebecca Natabo Ekwam, Robert Macharia, Timothy Nabea, Abdalla Yusuf Ibrahim, and Ahmed Qadar Dabar.

These members are expected to contribute in different technical and administrative areas as the country prepares for the continental showpiece.

The lineup also includes Gabriel Mghendi, Peter Kamau, Kerubo Momanyi, Benard Lagat, Collins Kalee, Caleb Amwayi, Ken Rungu, former AFC Leopards chairperson Dan Shikanda, Charles Njagi, Thomas Karugu, Evelyn Cheluget, Miriam Chepkoech, Rodgers Chimega, Diana Injendi Manyengo, and Collins Were.

Their appointment further strengthens the committee with deep knowledge in sports management, logistics, public affairs, and infrastructure oversight.

To ensure smooth day-to-day operations, the LOC Secretariat will operate from the Ministry of Sports offices at Talanta Plaza in Upper Hill, Nairobi.

The secretariat will be led by Antony Emmanuel Inzahuli Lung’aho, who will oversee coordination, communication, and administrative management as preparations gather momentum.

According to CS Mvurya, the committee’s immediate role will be to bring together key stakeholders from government, football bodies, sponsors, and regional partners.

They will also be responsible for coordinating logistics and developing a clear roadmap that will guide Kenya and its co-hosts toward the successful delivery of AFCON 2027.

A major part of the committee’s work will focus on stadium renovations and venue readiness.

This includes ensuring that all selected stadiums and training grounds meet the Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards, particularly in areas such as security systems, seating capacity, pitch quality, player facilities, and fan safety.

These upgrades are expected to play a crucial role in positioning East Africa as a world-class football destination.

Beyond infrastructure, the 38-member team will also oversee other critical aspects of the tournament, including ticketing systems, media coordination, sponsorship acquisition, transport planning, team accommodation, and fan engagement strategies.

The committee is also expected to lead aggressive local and international promotion campaigns to build excitement around AFCON 2027 and attract football supporters from across Africa and beyond.

To support its work, Mvurya noted that the LOC will receive funding from government allocations as well as private sector partnerships and donations.

This financial support is expected to help the committee carry out its mandate efficiently and ensure that Kenya, together with Tanzania and Uganda, delivers a memorable and well-organised tournament.

The formation of this committee signals the government’s commitment to making AFCON 2027 a success and gives fans renewed confidence that the region is on course to host a tournament that could leave a lasting legacy for East African football.
