Gachagua Issues Urgent Demands to IG Kanja Over Alleged Ichung’wah Attacks

Gachagua Sends Urgent Appeal to IG Kanja Over Alleged Plot to Sabotage Kikuyu Rally

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has formally written to Inspector General Douglas Kanja, raising serious concerns over what he describes as a planned attempt to disrupt the party’s political rally set for April 11 in Kikuyu Town.

Reports published today indicate that the letter was indeed sent as tensions around the rally continue to rise.

In the letter dated April 10 and seen by Newshub.co.ke, Gachagua claimed that there are well-coordinated efforts involving hired goons and some police officers aimed at interfering with the planned public meeting.

He said the alleged scheme is designed not only to block the rally from taking place but also to create fear among supporters expected to attend.

The former Deputy President directly accused National Assembly Majority Leader and Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah of issuing both open and indirect threats against the gathering.

According to Gachagua, remarks allegedly made by Ichung’wah during a public function at Alliance High School grounds on March 25, together with statements made in Parliament on April 9, suggest that there may have been prior knowledge of possible chaos surrounding the event.

Gachagua further questioned why no action had been taken against the lawmaker despite what he described as alarming remarks.

He said this raises fresh concerns about what he termed selective enforcement of the law, arguing that authorities appear quick to act in some cases while ignoring others involving politically connected leaders.

According to the DCP leader, intelligence from the ground allegedly shows that organised groups have already been mobilised to cause violence during the rally.

He claimed the individuals are expected to create confusion, damage businesses, and attack selected premises in Kikuyu Town so that police can use the unrest as a reason to move in and disperse the meeting.

He further alleged that the broader plan is to make the police response appear like a normal law enforcement intervention, while in reality it would serve as support for those sent to break up the gathering.

Gachagua argued that such actions would be aimed at frustrating the opposition’s growing political activities in the Mount Kenya region.

The letter also claims that key roads leading into Kikuyu Town may be deliberately blocked using stalled heavy trucks or lorries disguised as broken-down vehicles.

According to Gachagua, this would make it difficult for supporters, leaders, and invited guests to access the rally venue, while also exposing those caught in traffic to possible attacks.

In addition, he alleged that planning meetings involving local administrators and senior police commanders have already taken place, with the aim of frustrating the rally before it even begins.

These claims have further heightened political temperatures ahead of what is expected to be a high-stakes event in Ichung’wah’s political backyard.

Gachagua has now called on IG Kanja to ensure that the National Police Service remains neutral and protects wananchi instead of being used as a political tool.

He urged the police boss to take firm action against any organised violence and ensure that the constitutional right to peaceful assembly is respected.

The latest developments come shortly after a heated exchange between Gachagua and President William Ruto during the funeral of the late Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho earlier this week.

During the burial, Gachagua openly challenged the Head of State to rein in Ichung’wah, warning that failure to do so could damage his political legacy in the Mount Kenya region.

In response, President Ruto dismissed the former DP’s remarks, criticising him for appearing to dictate how national leaders, including the President, should manage affairs of state.

The exchange has added yet another layer of tension to the widening political fallout between the two former allies, as the battle for influence in the region continues to intensify.

This latest standoff is likely to increase public attention on the planned Kikuyu rally, which is already shaping up to be one of the most politically charged events in the region this month.
