Democracy for the Citizen Party (DCP) leaders have raised serious concerns, alleging that the government prevented former Deputy President and DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua from travelling to Kisa East for a major thanksgiving ceremony.
According to the party, Gachagua was forced to address the gathering through a phone call after multiple attempts to secure a flight allegedly failed under suspicious circumstances.
The DCP had organized the thanksgiving event on December 5, 2025, to celebrate the victory of their candidate, Aduda Okwiri, who won the Kisa East Ward MCA seat in the November 27 by-election.
Gachagua, who was expected to preside over the event and lead the celebrations, reportedly faced challenges that made it impossible for him to attend in person.
Deputy party leader Cleophas Malala claimed that Gachagua had already paid for a helicopter, but the owners were allegedly threatened by government officials.
According to Malala, the company was warned that they would lose business if they proceeded with the arrangement.
Malala added that Gachagua then attempted to book another helicopter, only for the owners to later say it had developed technical issues.
He reportedly tried securing a fixed-wing aircraft to Kisumu Airport, but even that option failed, raising further suspicion within the party.
These claims were later confirmed by Gachagua himself when he spoke to the residents of Kisa East through a phone call during the event. In his address, he stated that every aircraft he had booked was suddenly made unavailable, a situation he described as unfortunate but expected in the current political climate.
“All the planes I had booked were stopped from allowing me to travel, but it is OK,” Gachagua told the crowd, assuring them that he would not be discouraged by the alleged interference.
Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa also weighed in, accusing the government of deliberately frustrating Gachagua’s travel plans. Thang’wa claimed that President William Ruto’s administration was intimidating businesspeople and attempting to control who they should associate with politically.
Despite the setback, Gachagua promised supporters that he would visit Kisa East in 2026. He vowed to find new ways to manoeuvre around political obstacles, saying his opponents would not succeed in blocking his engagements with the people.
Just a few days earlier, on November 30, Gachagua had managed to attend another thanksgiving ceremony in Kariobangi North, celebrating DCP’s David Warui, who also won an MCA seat in the recent by-elections.
The DCP has been celebrating a strong performance in the November contests. Apart from victories in Nairobi and Kakamega, the party also won the Narok Town Ward seat, where their candidate, Douglas Masikonde, defeated UDA’s Robert Kanyike with 6,007 votes against Kanyike’s 4,479.
The party now says these wins show its growing popularity and claims that attempts to hinder Gachagua’s movements are a sign of fear from political rivals.
