Ida Odinga Rules Out Political Bid Ahead of 2027 General Election
Ida Odinga has firmly dismissed growing calls from supporters and political observers urging her to join active politics ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election.
Speaking to the press on Monday, April 13, amid increasing speculation about her future political plans, Ida made it clear that she has no intention of contesting for any elective seat.
The Kenyan diplomat, who currently serves as the country’s Ambassador and Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), said politics has never been her chosen path.
She explained that while many members of her family have built strong political careers over the years, she has always remained focused on her own professional and diplomatic work outside the political space.
Ida also addressed concerns over her recent absence from both public and political conversations, explaining that her silence had nothing to do with any hidden political strategy.
Instead, she said it was a personal decision linked to the mourning period following the death of her husband, Raila Odinga.
She noted that the loss was deeply painful and required her full emotional attention, making it impossible for her to engage in any public political discussions during that time.
“As we had said before, I have remained silent for quite some time. After losing my husband, Honourable Raila Odinga, I was still in mourning, and that was a very important period for me,” Ida said.
She further explained that because of that grieving process, she was not in a position to step out and take part in the political activities and alignments that many people had been discussing.
Reaffirming her stand, Ida described herself as an industrialist and not a politician. She stressed that she is comfortable with the role she has built for herself over the years and has no plans to shift into elective politics simply because of pressure from the public or political supporters.
She pointed out that politics in her family has largely been handled by others, including her late husband Raila Odinga, her daughter Winnie Odinga, and her brother-in-law Oburu Oginga, all of whom have remained actively involved in shaping Kenya’s political direction.
“Personally, I am not a politician. My husband was one, my daughter is in politics, and even my brother-in-law is a politician. Many people around me are in that field, but I am an industrialist, not a politician,” she said.
Despite holding an influential public profile and commanding respect both locally and internationally, Ida maintained that she is committed to continuing her service in diplomacy and development work.
She said she is satisfied with her current responsibilities and believes those already active in politics are better placed to handle the country’s political matters.
Her comments come at a time when political realignments are beginning to intensify across the country as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
Within the Odinga family, several names are already being linked to future political ambitions.
Among the most notable is Winnie Odinga, Raila’s elder daughter, who has in recent months increased her visibility within political circles.
Her growing role in national politics has fueled speculation that she may be preparing for an even bigger position within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as the race to 2027 gradually takes shape.
Even with these developments, Ida Odinga has now put to rest any rumours about her own political ambitions, insisting that her future remains firmly rooted in diplomacy, industry, and public service rather than elective politics.
