Kenya Met Warns of Heavy Rains Across Several Regions This Weekend
The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued a weather advisory warning Kenyans to prepare for continued rainfall across different parts of the country over the next five days, from Friday, April 17 to Tuesday, April 22.
The agency says the wet weather is expected to affect several regions, with varying intensity depending on the area.
According to the update, rainfall will continue in parts of Central Kenya, the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Southeastern Lowlands, and the Coast.
Kenya Met explained that the rains will not be uniform across the country, as some areas will experience heavier downpours while others will receive lighter showers at different times of the day.
The heaviest rainfall is expected mainly in the Rift Valley, Western Kenya, and the Lake Victoria Basin. In these regions, the rains are likely to begin in the afternoon hours and may continue into the night.
Weather experts noted that this pattern could lead to prolonged wet conditions, especially in places that already receive frequent rainfall during this season.
Counties expected to be most affected in these high-rainfall zones include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
Kenya Met stated that mornings in these areas may start with light rainfall in a few locations. As the day progresses, afternoon showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop, sometimes spreading to more areas before continuing into the night in scattered places.
In Central Kenya, including counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi, the forecast shows generally lighter rainfall compared to other regions.
These areas are expected to experience cloudy mornings with occasional light showers in some places. As the day moves forward, there may be sunny intervals, especially during the morning hours, before afternoon and night showers occur in selected areas.
While the rainfall will be lighter overall, Kenya Met still advises residents in these regions to remain alert as occasional heavier showers may still happen.
A similar mixed weather pattern is expected along the Coast and the Southeastern Lowlands. Coastal counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, as well as inland counties including Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, are forecast to receive scattered showers.
These rains may come at different times of the day, with some periods of sunshine in between wet spells.
In addition to rainfall, Kenya Met also warned residents about significant temperature changes during the same period. One of the key concerns is very cold nights, especially in Central Kenya, where nighttime temperatures are expected to drop sharply to around 10°C.
This means residents in higher altitude areas may experience noticeably chilly conditions, particularly during early mornings and late evenings.
On the other hand, daytime temperatures in several regions are expected to remain relatively high. Areas in Western Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the Coast are likely to experience warmer conditions during the day, with temperatures rising to around 31°C.
This combination of warm days and cool or cold nights may create mixed weather conditions across the country throughout the forecast period.
Overall, Kenya Met is advising the public to stay updated on weather changes, as conditions may shift quickly between sunshine, rainfall, and thunderstorms depending on the region.
