Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has spoken ahead of the planned nationwide maandamano, urging both protesters and security agencies to act with restraint as Gen Z prepares for demonstrations over the rising cost of living.
The protests, largely mobilized online by young Kenyans, are expected to take place on Tuesday in several major towns, including Nairobi.
At the center of the demonstrations are concerns over high fuel prices and the increasing financial pressure facing ordinary citizens.
Gachagua Backs Right to Protest
In his remarks, Gachagua acknowledged that Kenyan youth have a constitutional right to protest. He noted that many young people are expressing genuine frustration over economic hardships, particularly the rising cost of essential commodities.
However, he emphasized that any demonstrations should remain peaceful and lawful to avoid escalation or confrontation with authorities.
Firm Message to Police
At the same time, the former Deputy President issued a strong caution to security agencies. He urged police officers to avoid the use of excessive force when dealing with protesters.
Gachagua referenced previous incidents where protests turned violent, stressing that such outcomes must not be repeated. He called on law enforcement to prioritize the protection of lives while maintaining public order.
Authorities on High Alert
Security agencies have already heightened preparedness ahead of the demonstrations. Police have indicated they will closely monitor activity, especially in Nairobi’s Central Business District, where large crowds are expected.
Authorities have also maintained that protests must follow legal procedures, including prior notification, warning that unlawful gatherings may be dispersed.
Gen Z’s Growing Influence
The planned maandamano highlights the increasing role of Gen Z in shaping Kenya’s public discourse. Unlike traditional protests led by political figures, these demonstrations are largely youth-driven and organized through digital platforms.
Their focus remains on economic concerns affecting everyday life, with many calling for immediate government action to address the rising cost of living.
