Kenyan Footballer Gabriel Wandera Dies in Tragic Hit-and-Run Accident
Former Tusker FC and Kakamega Homeboyz defender Gabriel Wandera has sadly lost his life following a tragic road accident.
According to reports received by Newshub.co.ke, the talented footballer died on the morning of Sunday, April 19, after being involved in a hit-and-run incident.
The accident occurred in Busia County, where Wandera had recently been playing for Division Two side Bossman Knights as he continued his football journey.
The heartbreaking news of his sudden death was officially confirmed by his club through an emotional message shared on Facebook. In their statement, the club expressed deep sorrow, revealing that Wandera had been fatally struck by a vehicle.
They described the loss as devastating, noting that it has left players, staff, and supporters in shock and mourning. The club also paid tribute to him, remembering him as not just a player, but a valued member of their football family.
In a painful twist of fate, Wandera’s death came just hours after he had taken to the pitch for what would unknowingly become the final match of his career. In that game, Bossman Knights suffered a 3-1 defeat against their rivals Khwilare FC.
During the match, Wandera was sent off in the 20th minute after receiving a red card, leaving his team with ten players for most of the game. No one could have imagined that it would be his last appearance on the field.
Wandera had built a respectable football career over the years, featuring in the Kenyan Premier League and gaining recognition for his defensive strength and commitment on the pitch.
Throughout his journey, he played for several clubs, including Bidco United, Nzoia Sugar FC, and Kakamega Homeboyz, where he left a lasting impression.
In 2019, he joined Tusker FC, one of Kenya’s top clubs, further strengthening his profile in the league. Later in his career, he also turned out for several Nairobi-based amateur sides such as Roto Moulders, Tuffrun, KenAfrica, Maveto, and Ruiru Hotstars.
These moves reflected his determination to keep playing the sport he loved, even as he transitioned between different levels of competition.
In 2024, Wandera signed with Kakamega Homeboyz once again, showing his continued ambition to compete at a high level.
He was reportedly working towards securing another move during the second leg of the 2024–2025 season, a plan that has now been tragically cut short.
Following news of his passing, messages of condolence have poured in from across the football community. Fans, teammates, and rival clubs have all come together to mourn the loss of a player many described as hardworking, disciplined, and passionate about the game.
APS SEAL FC was among the teams that shared their condolences, sending heartfelt sympathies to Wandera’s family, friends, and teammates.
Former colleagues also expressed their grief, with one recalling their time together at Nzoia FC and describing the loss as deeply painful.
This tragic incident adds to a series of unfortunate events that have recently hit Kenyan football. It comes just months after the death of Silas Abungana, a midfielder for Kakamega Homeboyz, who died under distressing circumstances following an alleged family dispute.
Gabriel Wandera’s passing is a huge loss not only to his family but also to the wider football fraternity in Kenya. His dedication, resilience, and love for the game will be remembered by those who had the chance to watch him play and work alongside him.
