Kenya Met Issues Weekend Heavy Rainfall Advisory for Five Regions

The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority (Kenya Met) has issued a fresh weather alert warning Kenyans in several parts of the country to prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall expected over the weekend.

According to the advisory released on Friday, April 24, the rains are forecast to begin on Friday and continue through to Tuesday, April 28, affecting multiple regions across the country.

In its update, Kenya Met indicated that the rainfall will be experienced in parts of Central Kenya, the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya, Eastern lowland areas, and the Coastal region.

The agency emphasized that the rains may vary in intensity depending on the region, but some areas are likely to receive significant downpours that could disrupt normal activities.

For residents living in the Western region, the Rift Valley, and areas around the Lake Victoria Basin, the weatherman projected widespread rainfall in counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, and Uasin Gishu.

Additional counties expected to be affected include Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot. In these regions, rainfall is expected to mainly occur in the afternoon hours and could extend into the evening.

The advisory noted that these downpours may reach between 20 to 30 millimetres and are likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms, raising concerns about possible flash floods and related hazards.

Due to the expected intensity of the rains, residents in the affected counties have been urged to remain alert and take necessary precautions. Kenya Met warned that heavy rainfall could lead to flooding in low-lying areas, destruction of property, and in extreme cases, loss of life.

People living near rivers, flood-prone zones, or areas with poor drainage systems have been advised to be particularly cautious during this period.

In Central Kenya, including counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi, the forecast points to moderate rainfall.

The weather pattern in this region is expected to begin with cloudy or sunny conditions in the morning, followed by rain showers developing later in the afternoon and continuing into the night. This pattern suggests a gradual buildup of rain rather than sudden heavy storms.

A similar trend is expected in the Highland East counties, including Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, as well as inland parts of Tana River County.

These areas are also likely to experience afternoon and evening rainfall after relatively calm mornings, which could still impact farming activities and transport if the rains persist.

Meanwhile, in the Coastal region, counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, along with the Tana Delta, are expected to receive light showers.

Although the rainfall in these areas may not be as intense as in other regions, occasional showers could still influence daily routines, especially for those engaged in outdoor or marine activities.

Apart from the rainfall, Kenya Met also highlighted temperature variations across the country. The advisory warned of cold nights, especially in Central Kenya, where temperatures could drop as low as 7°C. Residents in these areas are encouraged to keep warm, particularly during the night and early morning hours.

On the other hand, regions such as the Coast, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of Northwestern Kenya are expected to experience high daytime temperatures, with some areas recording up to 36°C.

This contrast between cold nights and hot days reflects the changing weather conditions being experienced across the country.

Overall, Kenya Met has urged Kenyans to stay informed by following regular weather updates and to take precautionary measures where necessary.

The agency continues to monitor the situation closely and has advised the public to be prepared for any sudden changes in weather conditions during this period.
