Ni Wakikuyu Waliweka Kasongo Kwa Kiti”: Tension Inside Matatu Sparks Heated Political Exchange, Watch

Tension Erupts in Matatu Over Political Remarks Linked to 2022 Election

A tense and uncomfortable moment unfolded inside a public service vehicle after a driver made a politically charged remark touching on the role of Kikuyu voters in the election of William Ruto during the 2022 Kenyan General Election.

According to passengers who witnessed the incident, the driver made the comment in Swahili, saying, “Ni Wakikuyu waliweka Kasongo kwa kiti,” loosely translating to a claim that the Kikuyu community played a key role in putting the president in power.

The statement quickly changed the mood inside the matatu, with some passengers appearing uneasy as the political tone intensified.

The situation escalated when one commuter strongly objected to the remark. Visibly angered, the passenger responded sharply, declaring, “Mimi ni mtoto wa Mau Mau, siogopi. Wewe unafanana na Kasongo, enda huko.”

The reference to the Mau Mau struggle — a powerful symbol of resistance in Kenya’s history — added emotional weight to the exchange, signaling deep frustration and personal conviction.

What started as a casual comment soon turned into a heated confrontation, drawing attention from other passengers who watched as tensions rose inside the confined space of the vehicle.

Some attempted to calm the situation, while others remained silent, choosing to avoid getting involved.

The incident highlights how political discussions, especially those tied to ethnicity and past elections, can quickly become sensitive in public spaces.

In a country where politics often intersects with identity, even seemingly offhand remarks can spark strong reactions.

Such moments serve as a reminder of the need for restraint and mutual respect in shared public environments like matatus, where people from diverse backgrounds interact daily.

Maintaining calm and avoiding provocative statements can help prevent unnecessary conflict and ensure safer, more comfortable journeys for all passengers.
