Deaths Reported as Floods Wreak Havoc in Nairobi

Deaths Reported as Floods Cause Major Disruptions in Nairobi

At least three people are feared dead after being carried away by strong floodwaters following heavy rains that hit Nairobi on Monday and continued into Tuesday night.

The intense rainfall caused serious flooding in several parts of the city, leaving roads submerged and transport badly affected.

Areas such as Ruai and Utawala were among the worst hit, with many roads turning into dangerous flowing streams. Movement was disrupted at major junctions as vehicles could not pass through the flooded sections.

Many motorists, passengers, and pedestrians were left stranded for several hours as they waited for water levels to reduce.

According to witnesses, two of the victims were swept away on Tuesday while trying to cross a flooded road. One person reportedly attempted to cross first but was overpowered by the strong water currents.

Another person then tried to help and rescue the first victim, but was also swept away. Residents said such incidents happen regularly whenever heavy rains fall in the area.

On Tuesday evening, another tragic discovery was made after residents found the body of a woman inside a trench located between Zimmerman and Githurai 44 in Roysambu. Locals believe she may also have been swept away by floodwaters during the heavy downpour.

Apart from the reported deaths, the heavy rains have also caused damage to infrastructure in different parts of the country.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced on Tuesday, April 28, that part of the Iten-Kabarnet Road had been closed after a landslide blocked the road near Kolol. The landslide was caused by continuous heavy rainfall in the region.

In Nairobi’s Central Business District, many commuters experienced difficulties getting home or reaching their destinations as public service vehicles faced delays due to heavy traffic caused by flooded roads and overnight rains.

Residential areas such as Parklands, Utawala, and Westlands were also affected, with rainwater entering homes and compounds. Videos and photos shared online showed flooded estates, waterlogged compounds, and residents struggling to deal with the situation.

Outside Nairobi, flooding was also reported in Juja. Several vehicles were seen partially submerged along the Kimbo-Matangi Road in Theta, while drivers struggled to navigate through the deep water.

The Kenya Meteorological Service has warned that the rains are expected to continue in many regions across the country.

Forecasts show that more rainfall is likely in Nairobi, Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Kisumu, Kakamega, Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Turkana, and Marsabit.

At the same time, Kenya Met had earlier warned about the possible return of El Niño conditions later in 2026. In a report released on March 23, the weather department said there is a 58 to 61 percent chance of El Niño developing between June and December, with stronger effects expected around October and November.
