Government Responds After Hackers Target Kenyan Businesses
The Kenyan government has taken swift action following reports of a cyberattack on the Business Registration Service (BRS), where hackers allegedly breached the government database containing company registration details.
On Sunday, BRS Director General Kenneth Gathuma confirmed that authorities had activated an emergency response plan to address the security breach and minimize potential damage.
Immediate Response and Investigation
In an official statement, Gathuma acknowledged that the agency was aware of reports concerning a possible data breach affecting the company registry. He assured the public that as soon as the issue was brought to their attention, BRS immediately implemented its Incident Response Plan, launched an in-depth investigation, and alerted the relevant regulatory bodies.
“The Business Registration Service (BRS) is aware of reports about a potential security breach affecting company records. Upon learning of this, we swiftly activated our response measures, commenced a thorough investigation, and notified the necessary regulatory authorities,” he stated.
Gathuma further explained that law enforcement and cybersecurity experts had been brought in to track down the hackers and analyze the extent of the breach. The ongoing investigation aims to establish how the hackers accessed the system and whether any sensitive information has been compromised.
“Our cybersecurity team is collaborating with security partners, law enforcement agencies, and investigative bodies to determine the scope of the attack, assess its impact, and put in place the required countermeasures to contain and resolve the issue,” Gathuma added.
At this stage, the agency is still verifying key details about the incident, including whether confidential data was leaked. Once the investigation concludes, BRS has promised to update the public and engage directly with any affected individuals or businesses.
Enhanced Security Measures
To prevent further cyberattacks, BRS has strengthened its security systems and implemented additional protective measures. The agency reassured businesses and the public that maintaining the integrity of the company registry is a top priority.
“We want to assure all stakeholders that protecting our database remains our highest concern. As a precaution, we have reinforced our security systems to prevent similar incidents in the future,” the statement emphasized.
BRS also reaffirmed its commitment to handling the matter with openness and diligence, urging affected parties to remain patient as the investigation unfolds.
“We remain dedicated to resolving this issue in a transparent manner. We appreciate the patience and cooperation of all involved as we work towards a secure and lasting solution,” the agency concluded.
The cyberattack, which reportedly occurred on the night of January 31, exposed sensitive information belonging to private companies. The breach sent BRS into emergency mode as officials scrambled to contain the situation and prevent further data leaks.
