Gachagua Exposes Ruto’s Alleged Plan to Weaken Raila
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused President William Ruto of deliberately deceiving opposition leader Raila Odinga to gain an upper hand in the political landscape.
Speaking during the launch of Martha Karua’s People’s Liberation Party in Nairobi, Gachagua claimed that Ruto had privately revealed a scheme aimed at keeping Odinga distracted with political games. According to Gachagua, the ultimate goal was to derail Raila’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship while at the same time weakening his party, ODM.
Gachagua warned Raila against trusting President Ruto, suggesting that their current working relationship within the Kenya Kwanza government would not yield any benefits for the opposition leader.
“When he [Raila] announced his interest in the AUC job, I asked Ruto what his plans were regarding him. Ruto assured me not to worry. He said he would ‘plan’ him, keep him busy with endless politics, and eventually take over ODM,” Gachagua alleged. “I can see it happening now. So, Mr. Tinga (Raila Odinga), I hope you are listening to people who have been through this before. Let me give you some advice—walk away from him,” he added.
The former deputy president explained that, having been close to Ruto in the past, he was well aware of the President’s political strategies and tactics.
He recounted how Ruto frequently visited his home when they were political allies. According to Gachagua, even his wife, Pastor Dorcas, had doubts about Ruto’s sincerity and would often warn him about trusting him too much.
“He used to visit our home and would stay until late at night. After seeing him off, Pastor Dorcas would ask me if I truly knew him,” Gachagua recalled. “I would brush it off, but my wife insisted that he was a fraud. Now, we will tell Kenyans who he really is, and they will get to know him better.”
Gachagua’s Political Moves and Raila’s Silence
In recent weeks, Gachagua has appeared to be extending an olive branch to Odinga, possibly in an attempt to convince him to join forces in opposing the government. His repeated warnings to the opposition leader suggest he is trying to position himself as an ally against Ruto.
Meanwhile, Raila has remained relatively silent on the matter. The opposition chief has been keeping a low profile and only made a public appearance on Tuesday at State House Mombasa. During his visit, he stated that he would issue a political statement after further consultations.
At the same time, Odinga strongly denied allegations that the government spent Ksh13 billion to fund his campaign for the AUC chairmanship.
“I have seen claims about Ksh13 billion being used for my campaign. I honestly don’t know which world these people live in or if they even understand what a billion shillings means,” Raila dismissed.
While Kenyans.co.ke could not independently verify Gachagua’s claims, his recent remarks have further fueled political tensions, hinting at possible new alliances and power struggles in Kenya’s political landscape.
