Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has openly declared that he wants to run for the Nairobi governor’s seat in the 2027 elections—and he says President William Ruto inspired that decision.
On Monday morning, Kuria wrote a public “Dear Ruto” letter on social media. In it, he said the President’s recent remarks about the state of Nairobi convinced him to step forward and take charge of fixing the capital.
“Dear President William Ruto, you spoke directly to my heart today. Just like Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga has told me many times, Nairobi cannot continue being a city full of garbage, disorder, and poor leadership,” Kuria wrote.
He went on to say, “I heard your appeal. That is why I will offer myself to serve as governor of the great Nairobi County in 2027. I will fix Nairobi.”
Kuria was reacting to remarks President Ruto made on Sunday during the 70th anniversary celebration of the Africa Inland Church (AIC) Ziwani.
In his speech, Ruto revealed that the national government and the Nairobi County administration had agreed on four key development areas to help modernize the capital and make it cleaner and more competitive globally.
Ruto explained that he had met with Governor Johnson Sakaja and Nairobi Members of Parliament to come up with a joint transformation plan since Nairobi represents the whole country.
He stressed that the current situation could not continue and that the government was finalizing a partnership with private sector players to help clean up the city.
Kuria has now positioned himself as the person who wants to lead this transformation, drawing parallels to the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) arrangement introduced in 2020—an initiative that sparked mixed reactions at the time.
In the 2022 General Election, Kuria ran for Kiambu governor but lost. He was later appointed Trade Cabinet Secretary, then moved on to become President Ruto’s Senior Economic Advisor. He resigned from that advisory post in July.
By declaring his intention to run for governor of Nairobi, Kuria joins a growing list of political figures eyeing Sakaja’s seat. Other hopefuls include Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and former Principal Secretary Irungu Nyakera, all gearing up for what is expected to be a high-stakes contest in 2027.
