Nairobi County Responds After Viral CBD Pole-Dancing Video
Nairobi County has finally spoken out after a video of a woman pole dancing in the middle of Kenyatta Avenue went viral online.
Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria issued a strong warning, saying that public stripping or any similar behaviour will not be tolerated and could lead to serious legal consequences.
The viral footage showed the woman dancing on a pole as a large crowd gathered around her, with many people filming the incident.
While Mosiria described it as an act of public stripping, the video suggested it was more of a pole dance routine — an activity that involves dance and acrobatics using a vertical pole. Still, the county insists the behaviour was inappropriate for a busy public space.
In a statement released on Sunday, November 16, Mosiria said the county government cannot allow such conduct in the Central Business District, arguing that it is unlawful, immoral, and harmful to children who may witness it.
He pointed out that the act goes against several laws, including provisions in the Penal Code and the Sexual Offences Act, which clearly forbid public stripping, indecent exposure, or any immoral acts carried out in public places.
According to the Sexual Offences Act, public stripping is considered a serious offence that violates cultural and religious values.
Those found guilty can face a minimum of five years in prison or a fine, depending on the specific charge and the severity of the incident.
Mosiria warned that if such behaviour is allowed to continue, it could gradually normalise actions that undermine societal values.
He emphasised that the county has a duty to protect the dignity of Nairobi and preserve moral standards for future generations.
“If we fail to act now, we risk normalising behaviours that corrupt our values and expose our children to influences they should never encounter. Our responsibility is to safeguard both the dignity of our city and the morality of the next generation,” he said.
The Chief Officer also revealed that he had received numerous WhatsApp messages—at least 79—from residents urging him not to interfere with the matter.
However, he insisted that he could not ignore the situation, saying that maintaining discipline in the CBD is part of his duty to the public. “They keep telling me not to interfere with people’s businesses.
I usually mind my own business, but in this case, you will have to help me understand how such acts benefit the city,” he added.
Mosiria reaffirmed that stopping such behaviour is important not only to safeguard children but also to protect Nairobi’s image as Kenya’s capital city. He stressed that the county will remain firm in enforcing order and ensuring public spaces are used responsibly.
In addition to addressing the pole-dancing incident, Mosiria mentioned that his department will continue tackling other illegal activities in the city.
These include noise pollution, illegal waste dumping, and other practices that disrupt peace and cleanliness in Nairobi.
He assured residents that the county will strengthen enforcement efforts to restore discipline and maintain a safe, orderly environment for everyone.
