Kenya Met Reveals Regions Expected to Receive Rains This Week
The Kenya Meteorological Department has advised residents in several parts of the country to prepare for rainfall and thunderstorms during the course of this week, even as many other regions continue to experience mainly sunny and dry weather conditions.
According to the latest weekly forecast, areas in Western Kenya, parts of the Rift Valley, sections of the Eastern region, and the Lake Victoria Basin are likely to experience intermittent rains over the coming days.
In its outlook covering the period between Tuesday, February 10, and Saturday, February 14, the weatherman indicated that a number of major towns, including Kisumu, Kakamega, Kericho, Nairobi, and Kiambu, are expected to receive rainfall at different times during the week.
The department explained that while most parts of the country will remain largely dry, isolated showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop, especially during the afternoon and evening hours in the affected regions.
Counties within the Lake Victoria Basin and surrounding areas are expected to experience the most significant rainfall activity.
These include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot. In these locations, daylong rains accompanied by thunderstorms may occur, with some areas also receiving rainfall at night.
Residents have been advised to remain cautious, especially during thunderstorms, as sudden downpours can disrupt normal activities and affect visibility on roads.
During this period, temperatures in the rain-affected counties are expected to remain moderate. Daytime temperatures may rise to about 32°C, while nighttime temperatures are likely to fall to around 9°C in some areas, bringing cooler mornings and evenings, particularly in highland regions.
In the Central Highlands and neighbouring counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi, the forecast shows a mix of sunny intervals and occasional showers. Rain is expected mainly on Tuesday afternoon, as well as on Friday and Saturday, with some areas likely to receive showers on Saturday night.
Temperatures in these areas are projected to peak at around 32°C during the day, while night temperatures could drop further to approximately 8°C, leading to chilly early mornings.
Meanwhile, residents living in the South-eastern lowlands, including Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and inland parts of Tana River County, are expected to experience mostly sunny and warm conditions for much of the week.
However, the forecast indicates that isolated showers may occur in some areas on Friday and Saturday night.
Daytime temperatures in these regions may reach up to 33°C, while nighttime temperatures are expected to average around 15°C.
At the Coast, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and coastal areas of Tana River County, sunny conditions are expected to dominate throughout the week.
The region is likely to remain hot and humid, with maximum temperatures reaching about 34°C and minimum temperatures remaining relatively high at around 23°C, especially during the night.
In the North-eastern counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, the weather is expected to remain largely sunny and dry.
These areas are likely to record some of the highest temperatures in the country, with daytime highs reaching up to 38°C and nighttime temperatures dropping to about 17°C.
Similarly, Turkana and Samburu counties are forecast to experience clear skies and hot daytime conditions for most of the week.
Temperatures in these regions may climb to around 38°C during the day, while nights are expected to be cooler, with temperatures dropping to about 10°C.
The Kenya Meteorological Department continues to encourage the public to stay updated through official weather advisories, noting that weather patterns may change as the week progresses.
Residents in areas expecting rainfall have also been urged to plan their activities accordingly and remain alert during periods of heavy rain or thunderstorms.
