Ruto–Uhuru Political Tensions Resurface Amid New Wave of Criticism
Political tensions between President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta have once again resurfaced, drawing attention across Kenya’s political landscape as leaders from both camps exchange sharp remarks through allies.
The latest wave of controversy was triggered after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua publicly came out in defence of Uhuru Kenyatta, accusing unnamed individuals aligned to the current administration of attacking the former head of state through political proxies.
Gachagua argued that Uhuru, despite being retired, still has the constitutional right to express his views on national issues and should not be targeted for his political opinions.
His remarks have added fuel to an already sensitive political atmosphere where discussions about the role of retired presidents remain highly divisive.
On the other side, leaders allied to President William Ruto have pushed back against Uhuru’s continued political commentary, insisting that he should remain focused on retirement and avoid statements that could be interpreted as politically provocative.
Some government supporters have maintained that while former leaders deserve respect, they should also allow the sitting administration space to govern without interference or political pressure.
The strained relationship between Ruto and Uhuru dates back to the 2022 political transition, when the two, once close allies under the Jubilee Party, found themselves on opposing sides of Kenya’s political divide.
Since then, their camps have remained largely divided, with periodic exchanges of criticism often happening indirectly through political allies rather than direct confrontation.
Despite the heated rhetoric from supporters on both sides, there has been no recent direct public exchange between President Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
However, the ongoing political messaging continues to shape public debate, especially as Kenya’s political environment gradually shifts toward the next election cycle.
For now, the situation remains a continuation of a broader political rivalry rather than a direct personal confrontation, but it continues to influence national conversations on leadership, respect for former heads of state, and political freedom in retirement.
