According to the 49-year-old, trouble started on May 7 when he accidentally knocked an old woman while driving to Gulu city. NTV Uganda reports that the motorist took responsible steps by meeting with the injured woman’s son to inform him about the incident.

Baliddawa says he agreed to return to Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he had taken the injured woman for treatment.

He also reported the incident to the police at the Elegu border, after which he was permitted to continue his journey since he was transporting his daughter to St Mary’s Hospital Lacor.

However, upon his return to Kampala, the situation worsened when the Kanyanya police summoned him to record a statement. Instead of following routine procedures, they arrested and detained him, a perceived injustice that led him to the extreme reaction of burning his car.

Balidawa, who makes a living as a mechanic in Elegu, reportedly drove his car to an open field where he doused its interior with petrol before setting it ablaze.

The motorist claims he was rudely treated by the officer in charge of the station and detained despite being given a bond from Elegu police station.

“I went to the police station even before 7 o’clock in the morning. I called the complainant, Mr Eddie, and told him I was at the station. Nobody took me there, I took myself,” he lamented.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Germany-based Ugandan comedian Little Brian explained that Baliddawa claims his actions were meant to protest the alleged harassment.

“Mental health professionals have suggested that his behaviour may be indicative of a mental disturbance, potentially exacerbated by the car itself as it was the instrument of the accident,” he said.

Brian added that there is another speculation that the act of burning the car could have been an attempt to destroy evidence.
