Understanding the Finance Bill Protests: A Generation Z Perspective

In recent weeks, Kenya has witnessed a groundswell of protests against the Finance Bill proposed by the government. Among those leading the charge are the youth of Generation Z, who are voicing their discontent with the potential ramifications of this legislation on their future.

Why Are We Protesting?

The protests stem from deep-seated concerns about the economic implications of the Finance Bill. Proposed tax increases on essential goods and services threaten to exacerbate the financial strain already felt by many Kenyans, especially the youth. With high rates of unemployment and underemployment prevalent among our generation, these additional costs could further limit our access to basic necessities and diminish our ability to save or invest in our futures.

Impact on Education and Opportunity

For Generation Z, education is viewed as not only a pathway to personal growth but as a critical means to overcome economic challenges and achieve upward mobility. The proposed cuts in education funding and the lack of investment in skills development programs are particularly alarming. We fear that these measures will widen the gap between the privileged and the underprivileged, hindering social mobility and perpetuating inequality for future generations.

Environmental Concerns

Beyond economic issues, many of us are deeply concerned about the environmental impacts of the Finance Bill. The lack of provisions for sustainable development and environmental protection is seen as a significant oversight. As young Kenyans who will inherit the consequences of today’s environmental policies, we demand robust measures to address climate change, promote renewable energy, and safeguard our natural resources for future generations.

Call for Transparency and Accountability

Moreover, the manner in which the Finance Bill is being pushed through without adequate consultation with the public has raised serious concerns about transparency and accountability. We believe that effective governance requires meaningful engagement with citizens and stakeholders, and decisions that affect our lives should be made with our input and understanding.

The Way Forward

In conclusion, the Finance Bill protests reflect not just immediate economic hardships but a broader desire for inclusive and sustainable governance. Generation Z is united in calling for policies that prioritize education, protect the environment, and ensure economic justice for all Kenyans. Our protests are a testament to our determination to shape a future where every citizen has equal opportunities to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.

Watch Video

As we continue to raise our voices and advocate for change, we call on leaders and policymakers to listen to our concerns, engage in constructive dialogue, and work towards solutions that benefit all Kenyans, present and future. Together, we can build a Kenya that is fair, prosperous, and environmentally sustainable—a Kenya that we can all be proud to call home.
