Nairobi residents who are in the habit of urinating in public and littering have found themselves in trouble as the county government has begun a strict crackdown in the Central Business District (CBD).
City enforcement officers arrested several people in the operation, catching many by surprise.
One man was apprehended while urinating against a wall, trying to shield himself, unaware that county officials were watching him.
The crackdown is being enforced under The Nairobi Public Nuisance Act 2021, which imposes tough penalties on those found breaking the law.
Under this act, anyone caught urinating or defecating in public faces a fine of Ksh 10,000, a jail sentence of up to six months, or both.
The law also extends to food vendors who maintain unhygienic conditions. Such offenders could face up to twelve months in jail or a fine.
This operation is part of efforts to clean up the city and restore order, as authorities work to curb public nuisance and improve hygiene standards.
The crackdown has highlighted the need for more public awareness and facilities, as some residents have pointed out the lack of enough public restrooms in the city.
Despite this, county officials insist that maintaining cleanliness is a shared responsibility and will continue the operation until significant improvement is seen.
