The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops recently urged President William Ruto to consider the grievances of Kenya’s Generation Z and the rising number of abductions and violent incidents tied to youth protests.
They commended Gen Z’s role in raising national awareness on issues such as governance and economic challenges.
However, the bishops advised the youth to embrace dialogue rather than confrontational approaches, warning that persistent hardline stances could lead to further societal discord.
Archbishop Maurice Muhatia, the head of the bishops’ conference, emphasized the importance of dialogue and mutual respect for peaceful solutions, encouraging young people to seek inclusive conversations rather than resorting to protests.
The bishops also addressed the troubling rise in abductions that has accompanied the protests, highlighting that law enforcement must act within the law.
They expressed horror at the recent spike in kidnappings, often involving young protestors, and condemned the use of unlawful tactics.
Their message underlined that abductions and extrajudicial actions not only undermine democracy but also create fear and instability, which contradicts Kenya’s legal standards and values.
President Ruto was urged by the bishops to select cabinet members with integrity, reflecting Kenya’s diversity and fostering public trust.
This, they suggested, would foster a more inclusive governance approach. In addressing the youth’s concerns, the bishops urged him to focus on reforms that resonate with the country’s younger generation, helping to bridge the generational gap and ensure sustainable progress in Kenya.
