Kenyan police officers deployed to Haiti have faced significant challenges due to delays in receiving their promised allowances.
Reports indicate that, while their base salaries are being paid, the supplementary deployment allowances have been delayed for up to two months, leading to frustration among the officers.
In response to these concerns, the Mission Security Support to Haiti (MSSM) announced that the disbursement process for the outstanding allowances had been finalized, with payments expected to reflect in the officers’ accounts within the week.
The MSSM assured that mechanisms are now in place to ensure prompt future payments at the end of each month.
Addressing the issue, U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, apologized for the delayed allowances and reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting the Kenyan officers in Haiti.
She emphasized that steps are being taken to prevent such delays in the future, acknowledging the critical role these officers play in stabilizing Haiti amid escalating gang violence.
