The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced an increase in fuel prices effective from midnight on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. The adjustment affects Super Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene in its latest monthly review.
During this pricing period, the maximum retail prices for fuel will rise as follows: Super Petrol by KSh 0.29, Diesel by KSh 2.00, and Kerosene by KSh 3.00. EPRA emphasized that the new prices were determined based on Section 101(y) of the Petroleum Act, 2019, and Legal Notice No. 192 of 2022, which guide how fuel prices are calculated and regulated.
In Nairobi, the adjusted prices will be as follows: Super Petrol will now cost KSh 176.58 per litre, Diesel will retail at KSh 167.06 per litre, while Kerosene will be sold at KSh 151.39 per litre starting midnight.
These prices already include the mandatory 16% Value Added Tax (VAT) as required by the Finance Act 2023 and the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2024. The excise duty has also been adjusted for inflation as stipulated under Legal Notice No. 194 of 2020.
EPRA attributed the increase in fuel prices to various factors, with the primary reason being a rise in the cost of imported petroleum products.
Although the average landed cost of imported Super Petrol dropped by 0.54%, from US$612.93 per cubic metre in November 2024 to US$611.69 per cubic metre in December 2024, the cost of Diesel increased by 0.06%, rising from US$643.69 per cubic metre to US$654.10 per cubic metre. Meanwhile, Kerosene saw a significant price drop of 12%, decreasing from US$660.30 per cubic metre to US$619.64 per cubic metre during the same period.
EPRA continues to regulate fuel prices based on global market trends and taxation policies to balance consumer protection and market stability.
