Eight former senior officials from Tana River County government have been arrested following an overnight operation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

The officials are accused of being involved in the improper awarding of a Ksh. 9 million tender.

The individuals arrested include Fatuma Zahra, the former County Chief Officer for Public Service, Abashora Swaleh Salad, the former Principal Supply Chain Management Officer, and Ali Dhidha Hussein, a Building Inspector in the Department of Public Works.

Also arrested were Issa Funani Bere, a former Senior Supply Chain Management Officer, Mohamed Natse, Kevin Simiyu Wafula, and Fatuma Napasha Hussein-Electro, who worked as Supply Chain Management Officers and a Casual Inspector, respectively.

The eighth suspect is a director at Al-Karim Agencies, a company contracted to fence the wildlife offices and staff quarters in Hola town.

Six of the suspects were detained in Malindi overnight before being escorted under heavy security to Hola. The other two were arrested in Lamu County.

These individuals are expected to face five charges: failure to plan for the project, engaging in fraudulent procurement practices, forgery, conspiracy to commit a corruption offense, and deliberately failing to follow procurement laws.

Eric Ngumbi, the EACC spokesperson, confirmed that the investigation uncovered irregularities related to the award of the tender to Al-Karim General Construction Company.

The Commission has stated that it is continuing its pursuit of the remaining six suspects, including one Senior Supply Chain Management Officer and five directors from Al-Karim General Construction Company.
