ODM Official Declines Job Offer from President Ruto

Kenya: Former Kitutu Masaba MP and ODM party national treasurer Timothy Bosire has turned down a state appointment by President William Ruto.

Through a gazette notice published on Friday, January 17, President Ruto announced Bosire’s appointment as the non-executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). The position was set to last three years.

However, on Saturday, January 18, Bosire stated that after consulting with family, friends, and other leaders, he decided to decline the offer.

Despite this, he expressed gratitude to the president for considering him worthy of the position and for showing confidence in his abilities.

Bosire’s decision is not the first instance of an appointee declining a job offered by President Ruto.

In October of last year, former Machakos Town MP Victor Munyaka rejected an appointment as the Chairperson of the Kenya Animal Genetic Resource Centre (KAGRC), citing political issues within the country.

Similarly, in the same month, Millicent Omanga, a former Nairobi Woman Representative aspirant, declined her appointment to the Nairobi Rivers Commission, citing personal reasons.

Other Appointments Announced by President Ruto

Meanwhile, in the same gazette notice, President Ruto made several other appointments to government boards.

Former Gender and Affirmative Action Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa was appointed as the non-executive Chairperson of the Kenya Roads Board (KRB).

She will serve for three years, effective January 17, 2025. This appointment came with the revocation of Ahmed Kolosh Mohamed’s role.

The Kenya Roads Board is tasked with overseeing the development, rehabilitation, and maintenance of Kenya’s road network.

It also manages funds from the Road Maintenance Levy Fund and advises the Minister for Roads on related policies.

KRB’s responsibilities include ensuring road projects adhere to procurement guidelines, recommending road user charges, and identifying alternative revenue streams for road maintenance.

Additionally, Millicent Omanga was named a member of the Board of Directors of Kenya Shipyard Limited, a role assigned by Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya.

In another appointment, President Ruto named Jimmy Kadhua Kahindi as the Chairperson of the Kenya Fishing Industries Corporation.

This position, like the others, is a non-executive role and will also last three years.

The corporation plays a critical role in managing Kenya’s fishing industry and advising the government on its development and sustainability.

These appointments underscore President Ruto’s continued efforts to restructure leadership within key government sectors.

However, the rejection of state jobs by high-profile appointees such as Bosire raises questions about the dynamics between political affiliations and public service roles.
