Students Cause Chaos at Principal’s Home, Destroys His Car and House

Students Cause Chaos at Principal’s Home, Destroy Property

Teremi High School in Bungoma County was shut down indefinitely on Tuesday, January 21, following a chaotic student protest that erupted on Monday night.

According to sources who spoke to newshub.co.ke, the unrest was sparked by frustrations over the school’s declining performance in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations since the arrival of the current principal four years ago.

In a dramatic turn of events, students stormed the principal’s residence, causing significant destruction to his property. Among the damaged items were his vehicle, which had its windscreen and windows completely shattered, and his house, whose window panes were broken after being pelted with stones.

Images shared by newshub.co.ke captured the extent of the damage, showing the wrecked car and the vandalized house. Fortunately, the principal narrowly avoided being physically attacked after police intervened. Officers dispersed the agitated students by firing shots in the air, restoring order before the situation escalated further.

The discontent among the students appears to be rooted in the school’s poor performance in the 2024 KCSE exams. The institution recorded a mean grade of C (6.0618), with only one student out of 651 attaining a grade A.

Although 213 students met the minimum university entry requirement of C+ (plus), frustrations were heightened by the issuance of 36 Y grades, which are assigned by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) to candidates whose results are canceled due to cheating or other irregularities.

Adding to the tension, a week prior to the unrest, parents had stormed the school demanding answers regarding the unprecedented number of Y grades.

They expressed outrage over the canceled results, a situation that had reportedly never occurred at the institution before. Nationally, KNEC canceled the results of 840 students in the 2024 KCSE exams, citing irregularities.

The combination of these issues has left students and parents feeling deeply dissatisfied, with some blaming the principal’s leadership for the deteriorating performance and disciplinary challenges.
