In recent times, President William Ruto has faced significant opposition from Kenya’s Generation Z. This tech-savvy and outspoken demographic has been at the forefront of protests, particularly against the proposed Finance Bill of 2024, which aimed to increase taxes.

The youth mobilized through social media platforms, organizing demonstrations that culminated in the storming of Parliament in June 2024. These events led to violent clashes with security forces, resulting in numerous casualties.

The government’s response included rejecting the Finance Bill and initiating a cabinet reshuffle to address the concerns raised by the protesters. Despite these measures, the youth remained dissatisfied, viewing them as insufficient.

They continued to demand more substantial changes, including President Ruto’s resignation, citing ongoing issues of corruption, economic mismanagement, and a lack of genuine engagement with the younger population.

This movement signifies a broader generational shift in Kenya’s political landscape. Generation Z is challenging traditional political norms, utilizing digital tools to organize and voice their grievances.

Their actions reflect a deep-seated frustration with systemic issues and a desire for meaningful change. As the 2027 elections approach, addressing the concerns of this influential demographic will be crucial for any political leader aiming to maintain legitimacy and support.
