Former President Uhuru Kenyatta delivered a keynote address at the East Africa Region Global Health Security Summit in Mombasa.

In his speech, he emphasized the importance of self-reliance among African nations, particularly in the health sector. He challenged African leaders to reduce their dependence on foreign aid, especially in light of recent funding cuts by the United States under President Donald Trump.

Kenyatta remarked, “I saw some people crying the other day that Trump has withdrawn aid. Why are you crying? It’s not your country; he has no reason to give you anything.” He urged leaders to view this as a wake-up call to develop sustainable solutions and strengthen regional health systems.

Meanwhile, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been active on the political scene, attending the launch of the Democratic Action Party of Kenya’s (DAP-K) new headquarters on January 27, 2025. The event, hosted by DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, also saw the presence of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and other notable figures.

Gachagua’s appearance at the event has fueled speculation about potential alliances aimed at challenging President William Ruto in the 2027 elections. Gachagua, who was impeached in 2024, has been consolidating support and is expected to unveil his own political party next month.

The convergence of these events highlights a dynamic political landscape in Kenya. While Kenyatta focuses on regional health security and self-reliance, Gachagua is actively engaging with opposition leaders to form alliances ahead of the next general election.

These developments suggest a period of significant political realignment as leaders position themselves and their parties for future influence.
