Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga was reportedly attacked by an angry crowd, with his assailants claiming they had not been fully paid after allegedly being hired to disrupt a religious event in Nyeri.
The incident has brought to light the rising political and social tensions in the region.
The chaos unfolded during a prayer meeting at Kamukunji Grounds in Nyeri, which was led by Pastor Dorcas Rigathi.
The gathering was proceeding as planned until Maina Njenga unexpectedly arrived, accompanied by a large convoy of supporters.
His presence immediately caused panic among attendees, prompting the swift evacuation of Pastor Dorcas and other leaders.
Meanwhile, Njenga’s supporters, chanting slogans, took control of the venue, further fueling tensions.
Following the disruption, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua strongly condemned the incident, accusing the government of using criminal elements to interfere with peaceful religious gatherings.
He criticized the authorities, stating, “Unleashing the leader of an outlawed criminal gang and his goons to disrupt peaceful prayers and desecrate the altar is the lowest any government can go, no matter the level of desperation.”
This incident has once again highlighted the deep divisions within the region and the growing link between politics and religion.
The confrontation not only disrupted a religious gathering but also underscored the fragile nature of the political landscape, where rival factions continue to clash over influence and power.
