As the African Union Commission (AUC) elections approach, tensions are rising in Kenya, particularly in Kisumu’s Kondele area.

Residents have expressed strong support for Raila Odinga, Kenya’s candidate for the AUC chairperson position. They have vowed to organize significant protests if Odinga is not declared the winner.

The AUC elections are scheduled for February 15-16, 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Odinga faces competition from Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato.

To secure the chairperson role, a candidate must obtain a two-thirds majority from the 55 AU member states, equating to 33 votes.

The election process involves multiple voting rounds; if no candidate achieves the required majority, the election may be suspended.

In the lead-up to the elections, Odinga has garnered endorsements from at least 21 countries, positioning him as a strong contender.

However, diplomatic analysts have raised concerns about potential challenges, including possible opposition from Francophone countries influenced by external powers.

This geopolitical dynamic could impact Odinga’s chances of securing the necessary majority.

The Kondele neighborhood in Kisumu has a history of political activism and has been a focal point for expressing support for Odinga.

Residents have previously organized demonstrations to voice their political sentiments. The current threat of protests underscores the community’s deep-rooted support for Odinga and their desire to see him lead the African Union Commission.

As the election date nears, the situation remains tense. The outcome of the AUC elections will not only influence the leadership trajectory of the African Union but also have significant implications for political stability in regions like Kondele, where local sentiments are closely tied to national and continental politics.
