Three SEKU Students Die in Tragic Road Accident in Kitui
Three students from South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) lost their lives in a tragic road accident on Friday, February 21, after their motorcycle crashed into a stationary lorry in Kwa Vonza, Kitui County.
Reports indicate that the three young men were heading from the university to their residence when the unfortunate incident occurred. The motorcycle they were riding collided with a sand truck that had been parked by the roadside due to mechanical failure.
Kwa Vonza area chief, Ronald Mbuvi, confirmed that the impact of the crash was so severe that all three students died on the spot.
Police officers from Kwa Vonza Police Station arrived at the scene shortly after receiving reports of the accident. They immediately launched an investigation to determine what led to the fatal crash. According to their preliminary findings, poor visibility and the position of the truck may have been contributing factors.
The bodies of the deceased were later moved to the Kitui Hospital mortuary as authorities continued their investigations.
The news of the tragic accident has sent shockwaves across the SEKU community, leaving students and staff devastated. Many are struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of their colleagues, with grief and sorrow gripping the university.
Statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) highlight the dangers motorcyclists face on Kenyan roads. According to NTSA Director General George Njao, motorcyclists account for the second-highest number of road fatalities after pedestrians.
“Data analysis shows that pedestrians account for 38 percent of all road accident deaths, followed by motorcyclists at 25 percent,” Njao revealed last month.
He further emphasized the need for urgent measures to enhance road safety, stressing that NTSA and other relevant authorities should implement advanced, technology-driven strategies to create a safer and more reliable transport system.
This tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for improved road safety measures, especially for motorcyclists, who continue to face high risks on Kenyan roads.
