Raila Odinga Stadium to Host 2025 Madaraka Day Celebrations

The Ministry of Interior has officially announced that the 2025 Madaraka Day celebrations will take place at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County.

During an inspection visit to the stadium on Thursday, February 27, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo confirmed that the decision to hold the celebrations in Homa Bay aligns with President William Ruto’s policy of rotating national holidays across different counties.

The theme for this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations has been set as “Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs.”

Madaraka Day is a significant national holiday in Kenya, commemorating the country’s achievement of internal self-rule from British colonial rule on June 1, 1963. In preparation for the event, the government has embarked on an extensive rehabilitation project to expand the stadium’s capacity to accommodate up to 12,000 people.

Additionally, the government has outlined plans to upgrade the Kabunde Airstrip and improve key road infrastructure within Homa Bay to ensure smooth transportation during the celebrations.

Change in Hosting Plans
PS Omollo revealed that the government had initially planned to hold Mashujaa Day in Homa Bay this year but later decided to shift Madaraka Day to the county instead. He also noted that this year’s celebrations will fall on a Sunday, June 1.

“As part of President William Ruto’s administration, we have continued the tradition of hosting national celebrations in different counties. Our first national event was held in Embu County, followed by celebrations in Kericho, Bungoma, and Kwale. Now, we will be in Homa Bay, and after that, the next venue will be Kitui County,” Omollo explained.

First Time for Homa Bay
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga expressed excitement about the county hosting Madaraka Day for the first time. She noted that the National Celebrations Steering Committee, led by PS Omollo, had already begun assessing venues and inspecting facilities to ensure the county is well-prepared for the historic event.

“This marks the first official visit by the steering committee to inspect and evaluate the proposed venues for the Madaraka Day celebrations,” Wanga stated.

Meanwhile, Omollo reaffirmed that after Homa Bay, the next county to host a national celebration will be Kitui County.
