The Ministry of Education has dismissed rumors circulating on social media regarding plans to convert all secondary schools in Kenya into mixed-gender institutions.
These rumors, which have been fueled by a viral TikTok video, suggested that this move was part of a broader effort to reshape the future of education in the country.
In a statement released on Saturday, March 1, the Ministry clarified that the viral video, which proposed significant changes to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), was false.
The video claimed that starting in January 2026, when the first CBC cohort (currently in Grade 9) moves to senior secondary school, all secondary schools would transition into mixed-gender institutions.
The video also falsely stated that secondary schools would be restructured into specialized career pathways, instead of the current classification into national, extra-county, county, and sub-county categories.
The TikTok video made several claims that have caused confusion among social media users. It suggested that all boys’ schools would soon become mixed schools, in line with recommendations from the CBC.
Additionally, the video alleged that the Ministry of Education was considering converting all boarding schools into day schools, starting the following year.
According to the video, this transition to day schools would bring about significant confusion for Kenyans, as all schools would be affected by the change. However, the Ministry of Education has refuted these claims, assuring the public that there are no such plans in place.
This clarification comes just months after the government also denied rumors that national schools would be reclassified as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) centers, and extra-county schools as creative arts and sports centers.
In June of the previous year, Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang addressed similar rumors, dismissing the idea that county schools would be categorized as Humanities and Arts schools.
The Ministry’s recent statement emphasizes that the government remains committed to the successful implementation of the CBC, but the rumors circulating on social media are simply false and misleading.
