ODM MP Urges Uhuru Kenyatta to Support President Ruto for the Nation’s Good
Esther Passaris, the Nairobi Woman Representative, has called on former President Uhuru Kenyatta to step up and support President William Ruto in leading the country towards progress.
Speaking in Machakos on Wednesday, March 5, Passaris emphasized that since Uhuru is the only living former President of Kenya, it is crucial for him to play an active role in assisting Ruto with the governance of the nation.
Passaris pointed out that Uhuru’s experience and status as the only surviving former President should make him take the initiative in helping President Ruto strengthen and streamline the current administration.
She urged Uhuru to take a leaf out of the book of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who has shown a willingness to set aside differences in order to collaborate for the nation’s development.
She said, “Kenya has had four Presidents, and three of them have passed away. It is extremely important that the living former President actively supports the current President, because if that does not happen, the government will face unnecessary challenges.”
She further appealed, “Given that Uhuru has significant investments and family ties in Kenya, it is essential that he sits down with President Ruto, Raila Odinga, and like-minded individuals to help steer the country in the right direction.”
Although Uhuru Kenyatta has refrained from making significant political moves since leaving office in 2022, there have been moments when he has addressed the nation. In January 2024, Uhuru emerged publicly to speak about the rising influence of Kenya’s younger generation on political matters.
He encouraged the youth, particularly those from Generation Z, to continue fighting for their rights.
At the funeral of his cousin, veteran rally driver Kibathi Muigai, on January 17, 2024, Uhuru remarked, “The problem nowadays is that people are afraid. The youth, Gen Z, are the future. Fight for your rights, fight to ensure that you get what is rightfully yours.” He added, “If you stand by and let others take your wealth or rights, don’t complain later when it’s gone.”
Meanwhile, the political future of Raila Odinga remains uncertain. It is not clear if he will join forces with President William Ruto or revert to his traditional role as a leader in opposition as the 2027 general elections approach. Raila has been engaging in consultations with his supporters across the country to decide on his political path forward.
Despite his cordial relationship with the Kenya Kwanza government, Raila has also recently been critical of President Ruto’s administration, likely to maintain his stance as an independent voice and to preserve political neutrality as the country looks ahead to the next elections.
