John Mweha Kariuki, a concerned citizen and resident of Kiambaa Constituency, has sent a letter to President William Ruto, urging him to address several key issues that are currently affecting the lives of many Kenyans.
These include the controversial Social Health Authority (SHA), the mandatory Housing Levy, and the issue of succession in the office of the Deputy President, among other significant concerns.
Kariuki is no stranger to the public, as he is the same individual behind the petition calling for the removal of the ‘Naked Boy’ statue located next to the Supreme Court. He also filed a petition demanding the removal of 12 skeleton carvings in Parliament.
In his recent letter, Kariuki is asking President Ruto to intervene in a petition he filed regarding the election and swearing-in process for the Deputy President.
The petition, which was submitted on June 3, 2024, seeks to amend Article 148 of the Constitution to include a clause stating that the Deputy President should not be eligible to run for the presidency immediately after completing their term.

Kariuki argues that this change is necessary to prevent any potential conflicts of interest within the Executive branch and ensure smooth transitions of leadership within the government.
Despite submitting the petition almost eight months ago, Kariuki claims that there has been no progress made and is now urging President Ruto to step in and facilitate discussions on the matter.
In his letter, Kariuki writes, “I urge your office to facilitate discussions on this proposal in the interest of governance stability.”
Kariuki has also raised concerns about the transition from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the Social Health Authority (SHA). He is calling for the restoration of NHIF, with necessary reforms to improve its efficiency, accountability, and accessibility.
According to Kariuki, the shift to SHA has led to widespread inefficiencies that have limited access to crucial medical services for many Kenyans.
As part of his appeal to President Ruto, Kariuki has requested that the mandatory Housing Levy be made voluntary, allowing individuals to opt into the program based on their financial ability rather than forcing citizens to accept compulsory deductions.
He argues that this change would ease the financial burden on many Kenyans who are struggling to make ends meet.
Additionally, Kariuki has weighed in on the ongoing debate regarding donations to churches, calling for clear regulations on political donations to religious institutions.
He believes that while religious organizations play an important role in society, unrestricted donations from politicians have, in some cases, been used as a tool for political patronage.
By introducing transparent guidelines, Kariuki believes that the integrity of religious institutions can be maintained and that ethical governance can be reinforced.

Finally, Kariuki has highlighted the importance of empowering the youth, creating employment opportunities, and strengthening the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
He believes that these measures are crucial for ensuring the continued progress and development of the nation.
Kariuki’s letter to President Ruto reflects his deep concern for the well-being of Kenyans and his commitment to advocating for meaningful reforms that will improve governance and the quality of life for citizens.
