Ruto Shares His Commitments for Women on International Women’s Day

President William Ruto has reiterated the Kenyan government’s dedication to empowering women and girls, ensuring they have the necessary support to thrive and achieve their full potential.

In a video message shared on Saturday, March 8, President Ruto emphasized that the government’s initiatives go beyond addressing gender inequality and justice.

His focus is also on ensuring that women and girls have the tools needed to prosper in all areas of life.

“Today, we affirm our commitment to empowering women and girls—not just as a matter of addressing inequality and injustice, but as a key element for building a stronger, more inclusive, and prosperous society,” Ruto shared in his International Women’s Day message.

The president emphasized that empowering women is not only a matter of justice, but a critical step toward creating a more inclusive and progressive nation.

He noted that his administration is working to open up more opportunities for women, helping create a supportive environment where they can excel in various fields.

“We are determined to break down barriers, broaden opportunities, and build a space where every woman and girl can thrive, take on leadership roles, and fully realize their potential,” Ruto added.

The president also highlighted the crucial contributions of women in leadership, business, and innovation, pointing out that women play a significant role in driving Kenya’s development forward.

However, despite these reassurances, Ruto’s government has faced some criticism, particularly regarding the gender balance within the Cabinet.

Out of the 22 cabinet positions, only seven are occupied by women, which represents about 31.8% of the total, falling short of the 50% gender parity that was initially promised by the president.

Despite this challenge, President Ruto assured the public that his government remains dedicated to improving gender inclusivity in leadership and decision-making positions.

He acknowledged the valuable impact women have across all sectors—from managing families and businesses to leading in politics and driving community development.

“To the women who quietly shape our families, the entrepreneurs, innovators, and changemakers who are pushing our economy forward, and to the leaders in politics and community service who are guiding our nation into the future—your strength, determination, and vision inspire us all today and every day. Happy International Women’s Day,” Ruto concluded.

As Kenya celebrated International Women’s Day, the president urged all Kenyans to continue their support for women’s empowerment.

He emphasized the importance of ensuring that every woman and girl has the chance to achieve her fullest potential, contributing to the growth and prosperity of the nation.
