County Assembly Offices Shut Down Amid Fierce Clash Between MCAs and Governor

Nyamira County Assembly Offices Shut Down Amid Fierce Clash Between MCAs and Governor

Tensions between Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) and the Nyamira County Governor Amos Nyaribo escalated on Tuesday, leading to the forced closure of several offices occupied by top county officials.

The offices, which belonged to three County Executive Committee Members (CECMs), were locked after the MCAs ousted them following weeks of intense disagreements with the governor.

The affected executives were in charge of the environment, education, and sports departments. Their removal was part of an ongoing power struggle between the legislative and executive arms of the county government.

MCAs Justify Office Closure

Kiabonyoru MCA Vincent Benecha defended the decision, stating that the offices belonged to the Nyamira County Assembly but had been temporarily allocated to county executive officials due to a shortage of space.

“These offices are meant for the MCAs and their departments, but they had been occupied by county executive members.

Since our chairpersons and their teams have nowhere to hold meetings, we decided to evict the executives. We had warned them earlier, but they did not take it seriously,” Benecha explained.

Public Criticizes Senator for Inaction

Residents also weighed in on the ongoing conflict, criticizing Senator Okong’o Omogeni for not intervening to mediate the disputes. They expressed concerns over the prolonged stalemate, which has left county assembly workers without salaries for six months.

“We have a senator whose job is to step in when conflicts arise, but he has done nothing to help resolve this crisis. MCAs and county assembly workers have gone unpaid for half a year, yet the governor is working with the ousted county speaker to frustrate the assembly,” a concerned resident lamented.

The salary delay has only deepened the rift between the MCAs and the executive, with allegations that the governor and the former speaker are deliberately stalling the release of funds.

Political Wrangles and Past Impeachment Attempts

The turmoil in Nyamira County is not new. In October 2024, MCAs successfully impeached Assembly Speaker Enock Okero, citing gross misconduct. The motion was supported by 24 MCAs, while 11 abstained from voting.

Just a month before the speaker’s removal, MCAs had made an unsuccessful attempt to impeach Governor Amos Nyaribo. In that vote, 22 MCAs supported his ouster, while 12 opposed it. However, the motion failed because it fell short of the 23 votes required for impeachment.

The power struggles in Nyamira County continue to disrupt governance, with both the executive and legislative arms locked in a bitter standoff.

As frustrations mount, residents are calling for urgent intervention to restore order and ensure government operations run smoothly.
