Gachagua Responds to Claims That He Demanded Ksh10 Billion from Ruto

Gachagua Dismisses Ruto’s Claims About His Impeachment and Ksh10 Billion Demand

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has strongly refuted President William Ruto’s claims that his impeachment was caused by internal conflicts with State House officials and Members of Parliament.

In a statement shared on his X account on Monday, March 31, shortly after Ruto’s televised interview at the Sagana State Lodge, Gachagua also dismissed allegations that he demanded Ksh10 billion in exchange for mobilizing political support for the president in the Mt Kenya region.

Gachagua accused Ruto of misleading the public about the real reasons behind his impeachment, stating that the continued spread of falsehoods by the president poses a serious risk to the country.

“The biggest danger to our beloved country is leaders shamelessly lying to the people without hesitation. It is even worse when those in leadership cannot coordinate their lies. I weep for my country, Kenya,” Gachagua wrote.

His remarks came less than an hour after Ruto addressed the circumstances surrounding Gachagua’s impeachment for the first time since his removal from office.

During a media interview in Nyeri County, Ruto alleged that Gachagua had conflicts with key government figures, including blogger Dennis Itumbi, MPs Ndindi Nyoro, and Kimani Ichung’wah.

The fallout, according to Ruto, played a major role in his deputy’s eventual impeachment.

The president further explained that despite his efforts to mediate and resolve the misunderstandings between Gachagua and the government officials, the situation only worsened, leading lawmakers to take action against him.

Additionally, Ruto alleged that his former deputy issued an ultimatum, demanding Ksh10 billion and warning that failure to comply would make him a one-term president.

“I asked him why he was constantly clashing with Itumbi, my personal assistant Farouk, and the young leaders in government. I wanted to understand why these conflicts were necessary,” Ruto stated.

He added, “Gachagua told me that if I did not agree to his demands, he would ensure I served only one term as president.

He specifically asked for Ksh10 billion to help him ‘talk’ to the Mt Kenya region. I told him I would not agree to such a deal.

If losing a second term was the price, then so be it. That’s when MPs decided to take action against him.”

Gachagua was impeached in October 2024 by the Senate on multiple charges, including abuse of office and promoting tribalism.

His removal made history, as he became the first deputy president to be impeached under Kenya’s 2010 Constitution.
