Drama erupted on Wednesday, April 2, when Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu openly accused his fellow senators, Danson Mungatana (Tana River) and Tabitha Mutinda (Nominated), of allegedly receiving Ksh10 million each to support the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The heated exchange took place during an early morning interview on TV47, where Nyutu boldly challenged Mungatana and Tabitha to swear before God that they had not been bribed.
He dismissed their justification for voting against Gachagua, arguing that their true motivation was financial gain, not claims of divisive politics.
“Senator Mungatana and Senator Tabitha are misleading Kenyans about why they voted to impeach Gachagua.
Both of them voted ‘yes,’ and I challenge them—given all the explanations they are giving—to swear before God that they did not receive Ksh10 million,” Nyutu declared.
He went on to insist that all other reasons given, including accusations that Gachagua focused too much on Mt. Kenya politics, were mere distractions.
“These other excuses about ‘he was only speaking about Mt. Kenya’ are just smoke and mirrors. The real reason behind their vote is obvious.
Let them swear before God that they did not pocket Ksh10 million each,” he asserted.
Heated Exchange on Live TV
Nyutu’s allegations immediately sparked an intense war of words. Mungatana and Tabitha, both close allies of President William Ruto, fiercely denied the accusations, calling them baseless and defamatory.
As the debate escalated, the show’s host, Fred Indimuli, struggled to contain the growing tension, at times appearing unsure of how to restore order.
In an attempt to clear his name, Mungatana strongly dismissed Nyutu’s claims and even went as far as daring him to produce a Bible for them to swear on.
“I want to make it clear to Nyutu—I did not receive Ksh10,000, Ksh10 million, or any amount whatsoever.
These are shady claims, and we challenge him to bring proof. As we say in the Senate, ‘he who alleges must prove.’ If he is serious, let him bring a Bible right here so that we can swear,” Mungatana fired back.
He also demanded that Nyutu either substantiate his claims with evidence or apologize and withdraw the allegations.
“If you cannot prove what you are saying, then you must apologize and take back your words,” he added.
However, Nyutu, a strong supporter of Gachagua, refused to back down. He argued that he was not being given enough time to speak and insisted he had every right to air his concerns.
The verbal clash continued until Indimuli finally managed to regain control of the discussion, steering the conversation back to its intended focus.
Political Tensions Amid Ruto’s Mt. Kenya Tour
This dramatic showdown comes at a time when President Ruto is conducting a development tour of the Mt. Kenya region.
Notably, his itinerary includes a visit to Nyeri, Gachagua’s home turf, further fueling speculation about the ongoing political tensions between the two camps.
