The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has called on Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to either issue a public apology or step down after he was seen attending a political event hosted by President William Ruto on Wednesday, April 2.
According to LSK President Faith Odhiambo, Kanja made a serious mistake by participating in the rally, arguing that his actions violated the Constitution, which requires him to remain politically neutral.
“We urge Mr. Kanja to resign from his position as Inspector General and make way for a leader who is committed to serving all Kenyans impartially, without favoring any political side,” Odhiambo stated.
LSK Criticizes Kanja’s Attendance at Political Event
The Law Society of Kenya strongly condemned Kanja’s presence at the politically charged gathering, arguing that it undermined public confidence in the impartiality of the police service.
LSK also warned that his actions could alienate certain segments of the population who do not share the same political views.
Odhiambo pointed out that the Office of the Inspector General is established under Article 245(1) of the Constitution, which explicitly bars the holder from engaging in any activities that show political bias.
“The Constitution mandates the Inspector General to operate independently and impartially. He should not act at the direction of any individual or push a political agenda that goes against the core principles of national security.
By attending and addressing a political rally, Kanja demonstrated poor judgment and violated the law. He must take full responsibility for his actions,” Odhiambo asserted.
LSK Demands Apology or Resignation
LSK has described Kanja’s appearance in Nyeri as a politically motivated move and has demanded that he either issue a public apology or resign, allowing a neutral individual to take over the role.
Furthermore, the legal society has cautioned Kanja against participating in any form of political mobilization, rallies, or discussions, both now and in the future, while holding the office of the Inspector General of Police.
On the day of the event, IG Kanja joined President Ruto on his tour of the Mt. Kenya region and took the opportunity to address the crowd.
He reassured Kenyans that the police service remains committed to enforcing law and order without bias, ensuring that all citizens receive equal protection regardless of their political affiliations.
“Our main priority is the safety and security of all Kenyans, and we will continue to serve the country without fear or favor,” Kanja declared during his address.
