Gunshots and Chaos as Gachagua’s Guards Respond to Church Incident in Kasarani
There was panic and confusion on Sunday in Kasarani estate, Nairobi, after security officers attached to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua opened fire in the air to control a chaotic situation at the PCEA Kasarani East church.
The dramatic scene unfolded when a large group of youth stormed the church during a service attended by Gachagua.
Witnesses reported that the rowdy group, said to be demanding cash handouts in exchange for attending the event, forced their way into the church compound.
Once inside, the youth began causing destruction—breaking plastic chairs and creating a commotion that led to several people sustaining injuries as they tried to escape the chaos.
What raised further alarm was the fact that many of these individuals were reportedly dressed in military-style outfits and combat gear.
This caused fear among congregants and cast doubts about the intentions of the group. The church service had to be paused briefly as frightened worshippers fled for safety.
Amid the tension, a vehicle belonging to Gachagua was attacked and pelted with stones. Pictures and videos shared online by Kenyans.co.ke showed the car’s windows had been smashed during the confrontation.
Despite the incident, the former Deputy President appeared calm and remained seated on the church dais, showing no visible reaction to the disturbance happening outside.
The presiding bishop of the church strongly condemned the violence, calling it a violation of the right to worship freely. “We have freedom of worship in Kenya. The Constitution gives every person the right to visit any region in the country and worship freely without intimidation,” the bishop declared.
Notably, there was no immediate presence of the National Police Service (NPS) on the scene, either during or after the chaos.
Only Gachagua’s personal security team was seen handling the situation. The absence of law enforcement raised concerns among onlookers and religious leaders.
Despite attempts to disperse the crowd, the angry youth continued to push forward, shouting insults and throwing objects at the security officers guarding Gachagua.
The motive behind the organized storming of the church remains unclear.
So far, the NPS has not released any official statement regarding the incident.
Gachagua is expected to address the congregation later, with many observers interpreting the event as part of a broader political battle in the Mount Kenya region.
His appearance and the violence surrounding it are being seen as a possible reaction to President William Ruto’s recent tour of the same area.
This is not the first time an event involving Gachagua has been disrupted. On March 23, a similar incident occurred when a group of rowdy youth temporarily blocked him from leaving the ACK Cathedral in Nyeri Town.
In both cases, unconfirmed reports indicate that several individuals sustained injuries during the commotion.
The repeated interruptions of his public appearances suggest growing tension around the former Deputy President’s activities and political influence, especially in his home region.
