There seems to be a growing political alliance between President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga that could change the shape of the 2027 general elections.
According to Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai, who is also a well-known ODM insider, President Ruto might actually run for re-election under the ODM party banner—leaving behind his current party, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Alai made this bold statement on Sunday, suggesting that UDA should be dissolved entirely and all its members should officially join ODM. He insisted that for Ruto to seek re-election, he must do so through his former party, ODM.
“We are going to disband UDA and register every member as part of ODM. President Ruto must seek a second term on an ODM ticket,” Alai declared.
His remarks are likely to stir political debates and fuel controversy, especially considering that various top figures from both ODM and UDA have made conflicting statements about their newfound political collaboration.
Although Raila Odinga is seen as a key partner in this emerging alliance, he has previously made it clear that ODM is not part of the current government and may still front its own candidate in 2027.
His position has been strongly supported by party loyalists like ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Siaya Governor James Orengo, both of whom have continued to criticize the government and its policies.
Meanwhile, President Ruto has hinted that his relationship with Raila could extend well beyond the upcoming elections.
During a political event on Saturday, Ruto addressed Sifuna’s frequent attacks against the government.
In a light-hearted but pointed response, he reminded Sifuna that he, Ruto, was actually one of the founding members of ODM.
“When you talk about me, Sifuna, remember I am among the people who started ODM. So be careful with your words,” Ruto said with a touch of humor.
He went on to jokingly suggest that if Sifuna kept pushing too far, the party’s original founders could hold a special meeting to discipline him.
“We are the ones who formed this party. If we decide to convene a meeting of founder members, we can easily discipline you. So let’s proceed with caution,” he added.
These developments hint at deepening political realignments ahead of 2027, with possible shifts that could reshape party structures, alliances, and election strategies across the country.
