Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi found himself in serious trouble on Tuesday morning after detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) raided his residence and arrested him. During the operation, the EACC recovered a large sum of money suspected to be linked to corruption.

According to a detailed statement issued by the EACC Chief Executive Officer, Abdi Mohamud, detectives discovered Ksh13 million in cash hidden within the governor’s home.

The anti-graft agency believes this money could be part of illegal gains obtained through corrupt practices.

In addition to the local currency, investigators also found USD 13,000, which is equivalent to approximately Ksh1.68 million.

The EACC explained that this cash, along with other evidence recovered during the raid, will be used to build a strong case against those suspected of being involved in the corruption scandal.

“Today’s operation has helped us recover crucial evidence that will support our ongoing investigations.

We seized Ksh13 million and USD13,000 (around Ksh1.68 million) in cash from Governor Wamatangi’s home, money we suspect is part of corrupt dealings,” said Mohamud in his statement.

He further noted that once the investigation is concluded, the findings will determine the legal steps to be taken.

These may include prosecuting individuals responsible for the corruption, confiscating any unexplained wealth, and recovering any stolen public funds.

Governor Wamatangi was arrested at his home early in the morning and taken to the EACC headquarters under heavy security.

Despite the tense situation, he was spotted waving to residents from the back seat of a police SUV as he was driven away for questioning.

The EACC confirmed that the raid was part of a broader investigation into serious financial and procurement irregularities within the Kiambu County Government. The agency believes there has been massive misuse of public funds and abuse of office.

Alongside the governor, nine other senior officials from the county government were also arrested.

They are suspected of being involved in various illegal activities, including conflict of interest, breaking procurement laws, and abuse of power in relation to a controversial Ksh230 million contract.

This contract was for the supply, delivery, installation, training, and maintenance of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.

According to EACC, the deal was not only irregular but was also part of a broader scheme where some county officials and business people allegedly received up to Ksh1.5 billion through shady deals and fake supplies.

Among those arrested with Governor Wamatangi were the County Secretary, County Executive Committee (CEC) members for Finance and Lands, the Chief Officer for Finance, directors from the Supply Chain and Revenue departments, a clerical officer, and a director of the company that received the contract.

The investigations are still ongoing, and Kenyans are now waiting to see what legal actions the EACC will take against the governor and his co-accused as the fight against corruption continues.
