Tension erupted at Taqwa Mosque in Njiru, Nairobi, when an Imam reportedly stabbed two people in a heated disagreement related to the mosque’s leadership.
The dramatic scene unfolded following a long-standing conflict between two opposing factions over who should be in charge of the mosque’s operations.
According to reports, the argument had become so intense that police officers were called in to intervene.
After their intervention, they managed to calm things down temporarily and eventually left the scene. However, shortly after the officers departed, chaos broke out again.
The Imam, who appeared dissatisfied with how things were unfolding, returned to the mosque armed with a court order, claiming it gave him legal authority to take over leadership.
His sudden reappearance with legal documents reignited tensions between the two sides. During the confrontation that followed, the Imam pulled out a knife and stabbed two individuals.
One of the victims shared that the conflict had been brewing for a long time. He claimed that the Imam was not originally from their community but kept trying to force his way into the leadership position by using his religious title.
“Each time he tries to claim leadership, he hides inside the mosque, pretending he belongs here. But the truth is he’s not one of us. He uses his title as an Imam to push his way into our affairs,” the wounded man explained.
He went on to say, “We kept telling him that he shouldn’t be here because he isn’t part of this community. That’s when he suddenly stabbed me.”
The victim, who sustained injuries to his stomach and hand, was rushed along with the second victim to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, where they were treated for their injuries.
Police officers later confirmed the arrest of the Imam. They stated that investigations had already begun to uncover the full details of what led to the violent incident.
“We had already left the mosque after restoring calm, but shortly after, we received reports that a fight had broken out again, and some people had been stabbed.
The suspect, identified as an Imam, has been arrested and is now in custody,” police reported.
This shocking incident comes just days after Muslims concluded the Holy Month of Ramadhan, a sacred period of fasting and spiritual reflection. This year, Ramadhan was observed from Saturday, March 1, to Sunday, March 30.
During Ramadhan, Muslims fast every day from sunrise to sunset, refraining from eating or drinking— not even water— during daylight hours.
It’s a time meant for prayer, self-discipline, and community unity, making this recent act of violence even more unsettling for the local Muslim community.
