2 Missing After Floods Sweep Away Isiolo Politician’s Car
A major search and rescue mission is currently ongoing after two people went missing when raging floodwaters swept away a vehicle belonging to an Isiolo County Assembly Member.
Reports indicate that the car, a Toyota Prado owned by Oldonyiro MCA David Lemantile, was caught in sudden flash floods on the night of Friday, April 18.
The vehicle had three people inside at the time of the incident. Fortunately, the MCA himself was not among those on board.
The tragic event occurred at the KMC Bridge while the vehicle was heading towards Isiolo town from the Kipsing area.
During the ordeal, one of the passengers managed to survive by climbing out through the window and escaping the floodwaters. However, the other two individuals are still missing.
As soon as police officers from Isiolo Police Station received a distress call about the situation, they rushed to the scene.
While they were able to locate and retrieve the politician’s car, efforts to find the missing passengers have so far been unsuccessful.
The flash floods were triggered by a heavy downpour that hit the region overnight. The flooding has caused widespread destruction, including the displacement of over 200 families in the Soko Mjinga area of Isiolo County.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday, April 19, a local resident shared details of another heartbreaking incident. A child was reportedly seen being carried away by the fast-moving floodwaters. Sadly, the child was not rescued in time because onlookers assumed the worst and thought the child had already drowned.
In a related incident in Mogotio, Baringo County, a lorry transporting goods was swept away by floods while attempting to cross the Majimoto River early Saturday morning.
Witnesses said that the river had overflowed its banks following intense rainfall upstream, making it impossible for vehicles to pass safely.
Meanwhile, the Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of more heavy rains in the coming days.
In a weather advisory issued on Friday, April 18, the Director General of Kenya Met, David Gikungu, cautioned citizens to prepare for intense rainfall during the Easter weekend.
According to Gikungu, regions likely to be affected include the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the South-Eastern Lowlands, the Coastal region, and parts of the Rift Valley itself.
He noted that most mornings would start off cloudy, followed by heavy rains and thunderstorms in the afternoon hours. Residents in these areas have been urged to take necessary precautions and remain alert.
