Former Senior Government Official Alphonce Tokali Passes Away
Alphonce Mwambura Tokali, a former Kilifi County Executive Committee (CEC) Member, has passed away, nearly eight years after leaving public service.
His death was confirmed by Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, who remembered Tokali as a hardworking and respectful public servant.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Hon. Prof. Alphonce Tokali, who served as a Kilifi County Executive Committee Member from 2013 to 2017,” Kingi said in a heartfelt message.
“Waziri Prof. Tokali served the people of Kilifi with dedication and unmatched diligence. He played a key role in driving development across the county.”
Tokali worked under Kingi’s leadership during his first term as governor of Kilifi County, making their professional connection even more personal.
The two collaborated closely during a crucial period in Kenya’s political history — the transition from centralized national governance to the devolved county governments introduced by the 2010 Constitution.
While serving as the CEC Member responsible for Trade, Industrialisation, Co-operatives Development, Tourism, and Wildlife, Tokali became known for his down-to-earth approach and strong connection with ordinary citizens.
He often stepped out of the office to meet locals, understand their challenges, and come up with solutions from the ground level. Many residents remember him for his humility and hands-on leadership.
One of his most notable achievements was the launch of the Miss Tourism Kilifi pageant. This initiative was designed to promote local culture, heritage, and natural beauty, positioning Kilifi as a leading tourist destination in Kenya.
His efforts helped bring attention to the county’s rich traditions and boosted local pride.
Beyond his contributions to county development, Tokali was also an academic. He worked as a lecturer at Pwani University, where he shared his vast knowledge and mentored many young minds.
His strong academic background made him a firm believer in evidence-based decision-making, and he often pushed for policies backed by research and facts.
His death has touched many people, including his family. His daughter posted a moving tribute online, describing Tokali not just as a public figure but as a deeply loving and inspirational father.
“You were truly a great man. Thank you for being the best dad and a role model to us, your children. Your name is a treasure we will always be proud of.
Rest in peace, Alphonce Mwambura Tokali. Proud to be your daughter. Rest well, papa,” she wrote with deep emotion.
Tokali leaves behind a legacy of service, humility, and intellectual leadership. He will be remembered by many in Kilifi and across the country for his genuine commitment to improving lives and promoting local development.
