Opposition Demands Murkomen’s Immediate Resignation or Face Impeachment Over Shoot-to-Kill Remarks
Opposition leaders have demanded that Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen resign without delay, warning that he will otherwise face impeachment following his controversial shoot-to-kill directive.
During a visit to Githurai, where they met the family of Boniface Kariuki—a hawker who was recently killed—the opposition leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa, strongly criticized Murkomen’s statements.
They declared that his directive was reckless and dangerous, and said he must leave office or be forced out through an impeachment process.
“Mr. Murkomen, if you have any sense of responsibility as the Interior CS, you should step down right away. We are fully behind the impeachment motion being proposed against you, and we call upon all opposition MPs to support it wholeheartedly,” said Eugene Wamalwa.
Wamalwa argued that Murkomen’s remarks, along with recent troubling events across the country, point to a misuse of power and a threat to the lives of ordinary citizens.
His comments echoed those of Kalonzo Musyoka, who also condemned Murkomen harshly. “We want to ask President Ruto and CS Murkomen—when you talk about doing a good job, does that mean shooting innocent young people and killing them without cause? Is this really what you’re proud of?” Kalonzo asked.
The impeachment motion is reportedly in preparation by MPs who were deeply angered by Murkomen’s public statements.
These comments came during his recent tour of Nairobi’s Central Business District following the deadly June 25 protests, which left many injured and several dead.
In his controversial speech, Murkomen ordered the police to shoot and kill anyone attempting to raid a police station. “If someone approaches a police station to steal, shoot them. A gun is not a toy,” he stated, drawing widespread criticism from both leaders and the public.
Following his remarks, lawmakers allied with the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP)—a faction linked to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua—announced plans to begin the impeachment process. Eugene Wamalwa expressed full support for this effort.
“This Parliament must stand united. The Interior CS has gone too far by issuing illegal and unconstitutional orders that put citizens’ lives in danger.
We cannot remain silent and allow this to happen,” said Gitonga Mukunji, the MP for Manyatta. His position was echoed by several other MPs from the same political camp.
While the impeachment motion has yet to be officially tabled in Parliament, the political pressure continues to rise. Opposition leaders have vowed to push until Murkomen is held accountable for his actions and statements.
Murkomen’s leadership has also come under heavy scrutiny as cases of enforced disappearances, police violence, and general insecurity are reportedly increasing across the country.
Many Kenyans, civil society groups, and human rights activists have raised alarm over what they see as growing impunity within the security forces, fueled by statements like the one made by the Interior CS.
The opposition insists that Kenya cannot afford to normalize such deadly rhetoric from those in power and that firm action must be taken to protect the lives and rights of citizens.
