IEBC Dismisses Viral Claims About Removing 2 Million Ghost Voters From the Register
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has strongly denied claims circulating on social media that over two million ghost voters will be removed from the voter register before the 2027 General Election.
The Commission has labeled the viral post as fake and misleading. In an official statement, IEBC made it clear that it currently does not have a chairperson or commissioners in office, meaning any messages or statements linked to its members are false and should not be trusted.
The viral post falsely claimed that Erustus Ethekon had already been appointed as the new Commission Chairperson and was leading a large-scale cleanup of the voter register.
It went further to allege that Kiambu County had the highest number of ghost voters, followed by Meru, Nairobi, and Nyeri counties.
The fake message reportedly quoted, “We will remove over 2 million ghost voters from the register before the 2027 elections. Kiambu County has the largest concentration of ghost voters, followed by Meru, Nairobi, and Nyeri.”
However, IEBC responded quickly to set the record straight. The Commission urged Kenyans to ignore such posts and be cautious about believing or spreading misinformation.
“Please be advised that the Commission currently does not have a Chairperson or any Commissioners in office. Therefore, any information being circulated on social media regarding the Commission’s activities is false and should be treated as such,” the official IEBC statement clarified.
The Commission further emphasized that there has been no official communication regarding the auditing of the voter register or the appointment of new officials. They encouraged the public to rely only on official sources for updates about elections or Commission matters.
“We urge members of the public to treat such unverified posts with the contempt they deserve and to always confirm any information through our official platforms,” IEBC added.
According to a gazette notice dated June 10, President William Ruto officially appointed Erustus Ethekon as the new IEBC Chairperson. In the same notice, the President also appointed Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, and Mary Karen Sorobit as commissioners.
The other appointed members include Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima Araphat Abdallah.
Despite these official appointments, the newly named chairperson and commissioners have not yet assumed their roles. This is due to a High Court conservatory order that temporarily blocked their gazettement and swearing-in.
The court order came after a constitutional petition was filed, raising serious questions about the transparency and legality of the selection process.
Until the petition is heard and determined, the IEBC remains without official leadership, and any statements suggesting otherwise are considered misleading and invalid.
