Comedian KK Mwenyewe, Known for Mimicking Gachagua, Passes Away After Short Illness

Kenyan comedian KK Mwenyewe, whose real name was Zakaria Kariuki, has sadly passed away. He was well known for his hilarious impersonations of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. According to close friend and fellow comedian Kafengo, KK died on Monday night while receiving treatment at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital after falling ill.

“It is with great sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of our beloved Zakaria Kariuki, popularly known as Mr KK Mwenyewe,” Kafengo shared in a heartfelt Facebook post. “He left us last night while undergoing medical care.

We kindly ask for your prayers and support during this painful period. To his family, friends, and fans—may God give us the strength to cope with this loss. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

KK Mwenyewe had become a household name thanks to his clever and relatable skits that attracted a huge following online. His TikTok account had over 1.1 million followers, and his Facebook page had gained more than 412,000 fans. His final skit was shared on July 4, just days before his sudden passing.

He was admired for his unique deadpan style of comedy, often portraying everyday characters and situations in ways that deeply resonated with ordinary Kenyans.

Whether he was imitating high-profile politicians, teachers, or common wananchi (citizens), his creativity brought laughter and joy to countless people. His skits regularly went viral, especially on TikTok, drawing hundreds of thousands of views each time.

KK rose to fame in 2022 when a video of him humorously imitating Gachagua’s reaction to winning the general elections caught the attention of many. In that skit, he even altered his appearance—wearing an oversized suit and creating a fake potbelly—to match Gachagua’s signature look.

The video propelled him into the spotlight and led to several media interviews. His talent continued to blossom as he branched out to impersonate other public figures and relatable personalities.

The comedian was a student at Kisii University at the time and faced financial challenges, but his rise in popularity brought support. Notably, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja stepped in to assist him by settling his outstanding school fees, a gesture that further boosted his morale and popularity.

His passing has triggered a wave of tributes across social media platforms. Fellow comedians, fans, and political figures have shared messages of grief and admiration. Among them, Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah praised KK not just as a comedian, but as someone who used humor as a tool for reflection and unity.

“Kenya has lost more than just a talented comedian—we’ve lost a cultural voice and a courageous young patriot,” Omtatah said in a moving tribute. “My sincere condolences go to his family, friends, and the creative community. May his legacy continue to inspire others to speak boldly and creatively about our society. Farewell, Mr KK Mwenyewe.”

At the time of this report, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the figure who inspired many of KK’s most popular skits, had not yet issued a public statement on the comedian’s death.

The exact nature of the illness that led to KK’s death has not been disclosed publicly. However, several photos of him hospitalized have been circulating widely on social media, prompting concern and sorrow from his followers in recent days.

KK Mwenyewe will be remembered not only for his brilliant humor but also for his ability to bring people together through satire, laughter, and an authentic portrayal of Kenyan life. His voice may be gone, but his impact will live on through his work and the joy he brought to so many.
