Ruto Announces Construction of Another Stadium in Nairobi

President Ruto Announces New Stadium to Be Built at Jacaranda Grounds in Embakasi East

President William Ruto has revealed that the government plans to construct a new, modern stadium at the Jacaranda Grounds in Soweto, located in Embakasi East, Nairobi.

He made this announcement on Thursday while touring the ongoing road rehabilitation project along the Savannah–Stage 17 Bridge Road in the same area.

Ruto stated that the official launch of the stadium’s construction will take place in September 2025, and he will personally return to the area to preside over the groundbreaking ceremony.

“Starting this September, I will be coming back here to officially launch the stadium’s construction,” President Ruto said.

He added that the national government is committed to improving the lives of the people in Soweto and other parts of Nairobi by investing in various social amenities. These include the development of schools, hospitals, and essential public infrastructure.

This latest announcement comes shortly after the Ministry of Defence completed the renovation and handed over two key stadiums—Nyayo Stadium and Kasarani Stadium—which have been upgraded in readiness for the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) scheduled for August.

On Wednesday, President Ruto visited the nearly finished Kasarani Stadium, where he personally assessed the upgrades and interacted with Kenya’s national football team, Harambee Stars.

The renovations at Kasarani were done to ensure that the stadium fully meets the standards set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA in preparation for both the CHAN 2024 and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027, for which Kenya is one of the host countries.

Speaking during the inspection, President Ruto expressed confidence in Kenya’s readiness to host the CHAN tournament. “Today, we can proudly say that we are fully prepared to host CHAN on August 3,” he affirmed.

While addressing the national team, the President pledged full government support to the players and their training efforts ahead of the championship. He encouraged them to remain focused and committed as they prepare to represent Kenya on home soil.

“We believe in your potential, your talent, and your ability to make Kenya proud. You have the support of the entire nation. We will stand with you all the way and cheer you to victory,” President Ruto told the team.

Currently, Nairobi is home to several stadiums, including Ulinzi, Talanta Stadium—which is still under construction—Dandora Stadium, and City Stadium, which has unfortunately remained in a neglected state for many years.

With the planned addition of the Jacaranda Stadium, the city will soon have at least six modern stadiums available for sporting events and community use.

In addition to developments in sports infrastructure, President Ruto also mentioned that youth recruited under the government’s Climate WorkX program will officially begin their duties on Monday. This follows the conclusion of the shortlisting and vetting process.

Meanwhile, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja announced that all young people currently working under the Green Army initiative will be transitioned to permanent and pensionable employment terms.

This move, he said, is aimed at improving job security and creating long-term career opportunities for youth engaged in environmental protection and conservation efforts within Nairobi.

Governor Sakaja noted that integrating the Green Army into permanent roles is part of the city’s broader plan to support youth employment while enhancing Nairobi’s environmental sustainability.
