CECAFA Condemns Kenya for Pulling Out of Four Nations Tournament at Last Minute
The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has strongly criticised Kenya after the national football team, Harambee Stars, abruptly pulled out of the Four Nations Tournament just hours before kick-off.
The tournament was scheduled to begin on Monday, July 21, with Kenya already in Tanzania preparing to face Uganda in the opening match.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, CECAFA—an affiliate of the Confederation of African Football (CAF)—expressed disappointment over Kenya’s late withdrawal. The organisation described the move as both disappointing and unfair, especially given that most of Kenya’s earlier concerns had already been addressed.
“It’s deeply unfortunate that Kenya made the decision to pull out on July 21st, despite the fact that CECAFA had already responded to and resolved nearly all of the issues raised by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) hours before the first match,” the statement read.
The FKF confirmed the team’s sudden withdrawal in a public statement, citing safety and preparation concerns. According to FKF, the decision was based on advice from the technical team led by head coach Benni McCarthy, who deemed the playing and accommodation conditions unsuitable for the players’ well-being and performance.
“The technical bench, after conducting a detailed assessment of the current environment, advised against participating due to conditions that were not conducive for proper preparation or safe play,” FKF noted.
However, CECAFA refuted the claims, insisting that the conditions provided were in line with tournament standards and that Kenya’s demands were excessive compared to other participating teams such as Uganda, Tanzania, and Senegal.
To accommodate Kenya, CECAFA explained, they had gone out of their way by moving Harambee Stars to a hotel of their choice and ensuring the team had full board accommodation with meals tailored to the players’ dietary requirements.
Additionally, CECAFA arranged for dedicated internet routers to be installed at the hotel to meet the team’s connectivity needs.
“These efforts were made in good faith and on short notice to ensure that the Kenyan team was comfortable and fully supported in the lead-up to the competition,” CECAFA stated.
The regional football body further argued that Kenya’s last-minute withdrawal undermines the spirit of collaboration and mutual respect among East and Central African nations.
CECAFA emphasized that the Four Nations Tournament was an important warm-up event leading to the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), and Kenya’s actions disrupted the spirit and credibility of the competition.
The controversial withdrawal comes just two weeks ahead of the CHAN tournament, which Kenya is set to co-host alongside Tanzania, Uganda, and Zanzibar.
Observers and football analysts believe the decision to withdraw may have been strategic—designed to avoid possible injuries and give the Harambee Stars a stronger chance at performing well in the CHAN tournament.
Notably, Kenya will have the home-ground advantage during CHAN 2024, with all of their group stage matches scheduled to be played on Kenyan soil, giving the national team a potentially significant edge over their opponents.
